TRIP TO ELTHAM PALACE POEM 3
The Goddess is within us all, we are told. In the hit television series Friends, we are with the girls finding their inner goddess, for example. I was surprised to find such a beautiful statue by a bath in the palace and surrounded by gold, I decided she was a goddess on earth. The poem is about our experience of our inner goddess, as well as the imaginings of an historical character who became a beautiful statue by the water.
“Ulysses was not comely, but he was eloquent, Yet he fired two goddesses of the sea with love” Soren Kierkegaard
A Wider Perspective
With golden sheen in curvaceous number,
She was displayed effulgent in the light and her beauty,
Her breasts were round and moved in
Sweet succession with his passionate pulses,
White and receptive to his touch.
Beyond this there was little,
Caught on a pedestal not so very high,
But prone to the drowning waters below,
If she bent too far she was sure to drown
As beauties before.
There was no coolness to her aspect,
And sweat furrowed his clear brow,
Insistent and urgent in his hasty task,
Till leisure came to his mien
Through practiced attempt.
No book had prepared either for the task ahead,
Brave heroes of the past would not understand,
What had arisen and how unplanned
The sweet intent could fulfil a vow.
“Aristocracy's only an admission that certain traits which we call fine - courage and honor and beauty and all that sort of thing - can best be developed in a favorable environment, where you don't have the warpings of ignorance and necessity.” F. Scott Fitzgerald
Sincerity makes up for a lot of failings in our personality, when it comes to relationships. The artistic process is thought to mirror that of your life, if you approach it sincerely - and so the beautiful things that you create for others to enjoy can be reflected in your inner-self. Meditation and prayer and such things that focus you, even exercise in a mindful fashion is said to lead you there - to a place akin to inner peace, but temporary. I have managed to be 'in the moment' at times for sure, as you forget yourself and focus on something else. This is the opposite of what I am doing with my poetry, as I am taking from within myself and imagining. So it is an interesting journey of words and I hope that it is something beautiful to share with you!
