PARTITIONS POEM 3
Sometimes it starts with a kiss, sometimes it starts with a comment, sometimes it starts as an idea. Where our passions come from, we know is from the heart, but the mind and the heart combined can create a heat. You must be careful not to combust when the tension is caused by the idea! A shared meal sometimes leads to a shared life, but we cannot be scared of consequences to the point where we do not share at all.
Positions
Persuaded of your position,
I reclined,
Declining to reply with words,
I responded in kind,
Tracing a history with our lips
Was unnecessary
As we were joined in mind,
I stated my case
And rested on the chair,
Unaware of objection
Or pretext,
Our natures laid bare.
The broad of the short
Was too long to bear,
But once it was clear,
Your position
Was undeniable,
Positing a love deeper than thought,
We started from a blank space,
Not parting in through,
But finding partitions of fragment
Lost in a frozen landscape,
A union was made,
Between memory recalled,
Shifting between truth and fantasy,
We loved.
Breaking a shattered dream
Was not easy,
An uneasy growth from love,
Painful and strange,
Left us parted,
For fear of engulfment
Or betrayal
Or frenzy of mind,
Apart from the line
The intersection was indistinct,
Twixt in twain,
A line was drawn,
But without the measure,
No measured truth was found.
Alighting from your train of thought,
I found a tenacious confusion of clarity and muffling,
The melodious tones at once
Comforting and seating,
As the past found the future,
And the signs were clear,
But the muffled sounds remained
Muffled and so we remained strangers –
A stranger to myself –
Shapeless shifting
And tears of nothing
Bringing no release or revelation,
To content oneself,
Was to content oneself with
Nothing.
Your patchwork
And my patchwork
Combined was enough.
His laugh itself
The soothing balm
Necessary to salve my soul.
"An acquaintance merely enjoys your company, a fair-weather companion flatters when all is well, a true friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear." E.A. Bucchianeri
